WhatsApp is reportedly working to add the “Message Reactions” feature. You will be able to react to messages using emojis. In WhatsApp, it was possible to quote a message before and replying to an emoji, but in the future, you will have a dedicated feature to react to a message.

WhatsApp rivals like Telegram, Signal, and Slack had this feature for a long before and now WhatsApp is adding this too, to catch the arch-rivals.

WABetaInfo first reported this feature. They said the additional feature will be available to beta testers in future updates. WABetaInfo said:

Well, you have read the headline and it says all: WhatsApp is working on message reactions! Even if WhatsApp is an instant messaging app, this was a very unexpected move: recently we have seen a lot of new features, but it’s been a long time since we don’t see anything whole new about messaging. Today we can finally announce one of the first messaging features that’s coming on WhatsApp: reactions!

You already know what is a reaction: it’s usually an emoji that you can place on a message to express emotions. Instagram, Twitter, iMessage already support message reactions and today we can start to discover the progress of their development.

As a first step, WhatsApp is working on a message to present when the user is using an outdated version of WhatsApp that does not support receiving reactions. In this case, the user cannot see the reaction but WhatsApp will present a different message, asking to update.

We can tell how the feature will look like because it is in the development phase. But, the screenshot shared by WABetaInfo says you have to install the latest version of WhatsApp to see the reactions feature.

WhatsApp is working on and releasing many features at the fastest rate ever. This message reaction feature is now in the queue of previously announced features like End-to-End encryption for local backup, and multi-device support without a mobile connection, view one feature, and iOS to Android chat backup transfer.
